Peru mourns murdered journalist and candidate
Mourners in Peru are demanding justice following the murder of journalist and political candidate Susy Aponte Polo. The 44-year-old, known as "La China Polo," was shot dead during a campaign event in Caraz, Áncash. The attack occurred at a local market, distributing materials for her regional governor campaign. Aponte was an outspoken journalist operating a news website and YouTube program, "China Polo Dominical," frequently publishing reports on alleged irregularities, corruption, and organized crime, including individuals within the police force. Days before her assassination, Aponte publicly stated she received death threats and explicitly accused high-ranking police chief Víctor Revoredo Farfán of ordering an attack, filing a formal complaint. The murder, also injuring five others, is being investigated by the prosecutor's office as a suspected contract killing. Authorities swiftly made arrests. Among those detained are 29-year-old Luis Obispo Díaz, found with a pistol and identified as an alleged hitman, an alleged financier, and the attacker's transporter. The National Elections Board of Peru condemned the killing, emphasizing that violence has no place in a democratic society and urging swift resolution. The Peruvian Press Council called for a thorough investigation to clarify motives, highlighting concerns about press freedom. This incident casts a grim shadow over upcoming regional elections and underscores the dangers faced by journalists and political candidates challenging powerful interests in Peru. The community and national bodies are calling for transparency and accountability to ensure all responsible, including masterminds, are brought to justice.
