Germany and Chile Strengthen Renewable Energy Partnership

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Chilean President Gabriel Boric said the two countries would work together more closely in the renewable energy sector during a joint news conference in Berlin.

Scholz welcomed his Chilean counterpart with military honors at Berlin's chancellery, before holding a news conference with Boric.

Scholz called Chile a "pioneer" in renewable energies, while Boric said Chile is ready to tackle the climate crisis because "Latin America is no longer just a region to be supported", but an equal partner to other developed countries such as Germany.

He added "The use of renewable energies is important for protecting our climate. Chile and Germany want to cooperate closely on this, whether in the generation of energy or in the expansion of the necessary raw materials. Chile is a pioneer in this area, and we have planned a closer scientific exchange between the research institutes of our countries in order to achieve environmentally friendly and sustainable lithium mining. This is a milestone for the energy transition and our geological institutes will work together even more closely on these issues."

Boric also said both Chile and Germany supported Ukraine ahead of the upcoming summit in Switzerland to determine peace terms in the conflict. He condemned what he called the violation of the principles of international law, calling for an end to the war.

"Chancellor Scholz mentioned the significance of the upcoming World Peace Summit for Ukraine in Switzerland, in which we will both participate. Both Chile and Germany agree that the war waged by Russia against Ukraine is unacceptable, violates the principles of international law and must therefore cease, particularly in its most bloody aspects, such as that which has happened to the children in Ukraine who have been forcibly taken by Russia into its territory," Boric added.
