Iran confirms navy chief killed

Iran confirmed the death of Revolutionary Guards Navy Commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri after he sustained severe injuries, state media reported, citing a statement from the IRGC. Israel’s defence minister had earlier said Israeli forces killed Tangsiri and other senior naval officials in a precise operation. Tangsiri, who led the IRGC Navy since 2018 and played a key role in operations around the Strait of Hormuz, was reportedly wounded while organizing defensive positions on islands and coastal areas.

The IRGC characterized him as a prominent figure and said his martyrdom would not impede ongoing operations, praising the navy’s continued command and readiness. The statement recalled past confrontations with foreign forces and framed Tangsiri’s death as a call to sustained resistance, offering condolences to the leadership and pledging to continue military actions “until the complete defeat of the enemy and the liberation of al‑Quds.”

The announcement comes amid an intense cycle of strikes and counterstrikes that Tehran says began after an attack on February 28 that killed senior Iranian figures; Iranian forces have since launched frequent missile and drone operations against Israeli positions and U.S. bases in the region. International observers warn the exchanges risk further escalation across an already volatile theatre.
