Senior adviser killed in strike as tensions escalate

Iranian official Kharrazi dies of wounds

Kamal Kharrazi, head of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations and former foreign minister, has died of wounds sustained when his Tehran residence was struck in a US‑Israeli airstrike; his wife was killed in the same attack. Kharrazi, a longtime senior adviser to the leadership and a prominent post‑revolutionary figure, had been hospitalized after the strike and was later pronounced martyred.

Kharrazi led the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, an advisory body reporting to the leadership that provides long‑term foreign policy analysis. His death is being framed by Iranian authorities as martyrdom amid a broader confrontation that has resulted in substantial casualties and heightened regional tensions.

The strikes followed the assassination of then‑Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and other top officials, events that Tehran describes as unprovoked aggression. Iranian forces responded with attacks on US and Israeli positions in the region, which officials say inflicted heavy damage on the attackers and strengthened national unity. A mediated ceasefire and talks in Islamabad were arranged, with Iran presenting a ten‑point negotiation plan seeking withdrawal of US forces, sanctions relief and guarantees over the Strait of Hormuz.
