Koepka Takes Four-Shot Lead in LIV Golf Chicago
Brooks Koepka has taken a commanding lead in the first round of LIV Golf Chicago, shooting an impressive 8-under 62 at Bolingbrook Golf Club. This performance puts him in a strong position to win the regular-season finale for the third consecutive year in LIV Golf's history.
Koepka's bogey-free round gave him a four-shot advantage over his nearest competitor, Paul Casey, who shot a 66. Anirban Lahiri is in third place with a 67, while Bryson DeChambeau is tied for fourth after shooting a 68. The Crushers GC team, featuring Casey, Lahiri, and DeChambeau, leads the team competition by four shots.
This tournament holds significant implications for the season-long Individual Championship. While the top two spots are secured by Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann, Koepka has a chance to overtake Tyrrell Hatton for third place. Koepka needs a win and for Hatton to finish below third to achieve this. After the first round, Hatton is tied for 38th with a 3-over 73, leaving the door open for Koepka.
Rahm and Niemann, battling for the top spot in the Individual Championship, played in the same group. Niemann's 68 compared to Rahm's 69 has him projected to overtake Rahm for the number one position. The two will be grouped together again in the second round.
Koepka's exceptional performance included leading the field in scrambling and a particularly strong putting display, especially in the final six holes where he made five birdies. He attributed his success to his putting, calling it his best putting day "in a long time."
The challenging course conditions, including firm grounds and tricky winds, made Koepka's round even more impressive. His four-shot lead after the opening round is just shy of the LIV Golf record for the biggest lead after day one.
