Mascherano named Inter Miami head coach
Inter Miami CF has announced the appointment of Javier Mascherano as their new head coach, marking a significant reunion with former teammate and club captain Lionel Messi. The 40-year-old Argentine has signed a contract that runs through 2027, taking on his first club management role after leading Argentina's youth teams, including the U-23 squad at the 2024 Olympics.
The appointment comes following Gerardo Tata Martino's departure for personal reasons, despite the team's successful regular season where they claimed the Supporters' Shield with a record-breaking 74 points in 34 games. However, the team's early exit from the MLS Cup playoffs against Atlanta United prompted changes in leadership.
Mascherano, nicknamed "The Little Boss," brings with him a wealth of playing experience from prestigious clubs including River Plate, Corinthians, Liverpool, and Barcelona. At the Catalan club, he shared the pitch with current Inter Miami stars Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets.
Club co-owner Jorge Mas revealed that Messi was consulted during the selection process. In their discussion, Mas sought Messi's input on improving the roster and maximizing its potential. While MLS experience was considered beneficial, the primary focus was on finding a manager capable of handling a roster with "unlimited potential."
The appointment represents a strategic move for Inter Miami, bringing in a figure deeply familiar with their star player and several key squad members. Mascherano's extensive playing career at the highest level, combined with his recent experience in developing young talent with Argentina's youth teams, positions him as an intriguing choice to lead the ambitious MLS side into their next chapter.
