Putin praises Russia's recent election results
Russian President Vladimir Putin commended the latest parliamentary election outcomes. United Russia secured a significant victory, maintaining its constitutional majority in the State Duma. It won approximately 349-355 seats, up from 343 seats in 2016. This grants the party power to pass laws and propose constitutional amendments without needing other factions' support, reinforcing its political dominance. Voter turnout was 59.3-59.8%. Putin praised the high participation, asserting it ensured the vote's "legitimacy" and that of Russia's government bodies. He suggested this turnout underscored national consensus and stability. He also claimed foreign interference attempts had failed. Other parties' seat counts: Communist Party 37-40, Liberal Democratic Party 21-25, New People 13-20, A Just Russia "Patriots For Truth" 17-27, and Rodina 1. These parties are often characterized as "systemic opposition," generally aligning with Kremlin policies. Elections occurred amidst the Ukraine conflict, with voting in annexed regions including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Crimea. Critics raised concerns about fairness, citing lack of genuine opposition and allegations of irregularities like ballot stuffing and coerced voting. Anti-war parties were largely barred, often through denied registration or disqualification. Despite criticisms, the Kremlin views results as a sign of national unity and strong support for its leadership.
