Russian strikes hit central and eastern Ukraine

A Russian missile strike on Ukraine’s central Cherkasy region wounded six people, including two children, after a projectile hit the city of Uman, regional authorities said. Emergency services deployed ambulances, fire crews and police to evacuate residents from damaged homes and assess the scene. Cherkasy governor Ihor Taburets reported that more than 50 private houses sustained damage; police footage and satellite imagery verified destroyed residential buildings, shattered windows and debris-strewn streets. The injured were taken to hospital with shrapnel and blast-related wounds; officials said none were immediately reported in critical condition. Power and utilities in parts of the neighborhood were temporarily disrupted as crews worked on repairs, and local authorities urged residents to heed air-raid warnings while investigations into the type of missile and any interceptions continued.

Separately, a Russian strike on Kharkiv in the northeast killed two people and injured eight others, including an infant, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said. The strikes damaged apartment blocks and civilian infrastructure; emergency teams rescued people trapped under rubble and fought fires sparked by the blasts. Images distributed by officials showed heavily damaged façades, scorched vehicles and rubble across streets. Medical teams treated shrapnel and blast injuries, and several victims remained under observation. Utilities were interrupted in affected neighborhoods as repair crews responded.

Ukrainian authorities condemned both strikes as attacks on populated areas, saying they underscore the peril faced by civilians far from front lines. Russia has denied deliberately targeting civilians, asserting its aims are military; independent monitors and Ukrainian officials, however, report repeated strikes on residential zones. The incidents occurred amid a wider wave of Russian missile and drone attacks across multiple regions, keeping air-defence systems engaged and prompting repeated alerts for civilians. Local officials emphasized caution, ongoing cleanup and damage assessments, and renewed appeals for increased air-defence support to protect urban centers from long-range bombardment as investigations into casualties and damage continue.
