Tomatoes fly as festival returns in Colombia

Tomatoes flew through the air as thousands gathered in Sutamarchán, Colombia, for the 15th edition of the Gran Tomatina Colombiana. Inspired by Spain’s La Tomatina, the festival saw revellers hurl over 45 tonnes of overripe, non‑consumable tomatoes at one another, turning the streets into a vibrant, red battleground. The food fight marks the festival’s return after several years of suspension and pays tribute to the town’s tomato‑centered economy, with between 70% and 80% of local families earning their livelihood through tomato farming.

Approximately 20,000 visitors have flocked to the event to partake in this unique celebration. The festival not only highlights Sutamarchán’s agricultural heritage but also serves as a boost to local tourism and community spirit. Participants, including both locals and tourists, gathered at the municipal stadium and other designated areas where they joyfully engaged in the messy battle. Safety was a key concern; organizers mandated the wearing of official festival T‑shirts and strictly prohibited the use of hard objects that could cause injury, while local firefighters were also on hand to assist with post‐battle clean-up efforts.

In addition to the tomato fight, the festival’s schedule packed in a host of cultural and recreational activities. Visitors enjoyed parades, music performances, traditional games, and fireworks that added a festive backdrop to the event. A special “Tomatinita Infantil” segment provided a safe space for children under 10 to join in the fun without risk.

The Gran Tomatina Colombiana has grown into an important cultural event for the region, drawing crowds each year and reinforcing the bond between the town’s traditions and its economic backbone. As Sutamarchán celebrates its pulp‑and‑juice-covered streets, the festival stands as a testament to the town’s resilience and its innovative efforts to blend agricultural pride, community engagement, and festive exuberance into a single, memorable celebration.
