Trump may accept Qatari jet as Air Force One

President Donald Trump's administration is reportedly set to accept a Boeing 747-8 jet as a gift from the Qatari royal family, which would be modified to serve as Air Force One. This luxury aircraft, valued at around $400 million, is intended to be donated to Trump's presidential library after he leaves office. The plan was first reported by ABC News and has sparked significant controversy.
Democrats and good government advocates have condemned the proposal, raising ethical and legal concerns. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the move, suggesting it represents foreign influence in U.S. governance. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the decision, stating that any gifts from foreign governments are accepted in compliance with applicable laws and emphasizing the administration's commitment to transparency.
A spokesperson for Qatar indicated that the transfer of the aircraft is still under consideration, and no final decision has been made. The Boeing 747-8, often referred to as a "flying palace," features luxurious interiors designed by Alberto Pinto, including gold accents and plush seating. The Trump administration is seeking this interim solution due to delays in the delivery of two new VC-25B aircraft, originally ordered in 2018 and now not expected until at least 2035.
The proposal has drawn bipartisan criticism, with concerns about potential violations of the Constitution's Emoluments Clause, which prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments. Even some Republican figures have expressed unease about the optics of accepting such a gift from a nation with controversial ties. In response, the Trump administration argues that the gift is lawful, as the aircraft will be transferred to the U.S. Air Force rather than directly to Trump.
An official announcement regarding the acceptance of the aircraft is anticipated during Trump's upcoming trip to the Gulf region, as the administration continues to face scrutiny over the ethical implications of this arrangement.
