Bucșa wins first WTA singles title
Spaniard defeats Frech to claim Mérida Open crown
Spain’s Cristina Bucșa captured her first WTA tour-level singles title at the Mérida Open, defeating Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in a decisive final in Mexico. The 28-year-old, ranked 63rd, rode momentum from a semifinal upset of top seed Jasmine Paolini into the championship match, converting five break points and winning 74.4% of her first-serve points (32 of 43).
Bucșa started strongly, breaking Frech’s opening service game and dominating the first set before dropping the second—her first set loss of the tournament. She regained control in the decider, racing to a 4-1 lead and though she missed a chance to serve out the match after being broken, she immediately broke back to clinch the title. Her composed baseline play, precise returns and steady serving limited unforced errors at critical moments and helped her navigate tense exchanges throughout the week.
The Mérida victory marks a significant career breakthrough for Bucșa, who previously spent years on the ITF circuit and had reached WTA finals without lifting a tour-level trophy. The title brings valuable ranking points that are expected to improve her WTA standing and enhance her prospects for direct entry into upcoming major events. It also solidifies her growing presence on the tour after a run that included multiple wins over higher-ranked opponents.
Bucșa credited her team and supporters after the match, describing the triumph as a dream milestone and a major confidence boost as she prepares for the next stretch of the season. The Mérida Open crown not only rewards a week of resilient tennis and key tactical execution but also signals a potential turning point in her career as she seeks to build on this breakthrough at higher-profile tournaments.
