Canada wildfire grows, prompts evacuations
A massive wildfire rages across British Columbia, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate. This escalating crisis affects numerous communities across the province. The Bald Range wildfire, west of Summerland, has expanded, now estimated to span over 13,600 hectares. This represents a substantial and rapid increase in size over recent days. It is classified "out of control", exhibiting extreme fire behavior with rapid spread and spot fires igniting up to a kilometer away. Such aggressive behavior poses significant challenges for containment.Summerland is under evacuation order, along with thousands from Peachland, Okanagan-Similkameen and Central Okanagan Regional Districts. Evacuation alerts include parts of Penticton. An 80-year-old woman died while fleeing the Meadow Valley area northwest of Summerland, her death a direct result of the wildfire.British Columbia declared a provincial state of emergency, granting additional powers for travel restrictions and commandeering accommodations. Extensive destruction includes homes lost in Summerland's Garnet and Prairie Valleys, and the rural community of Faulder. Power outages and boil water notices in some areas.Over one hundred firefighting personnel are working tirelessly, supported by helicopters, skimmers, and heavy equipment. Challenging conditions, including shifting winds and prolonged drought, are complicating efforts to contain the blaze. Officials warn it could take weeks before evacuated residents can return, as many areas remain unsafe due to ongoing fire activity and hazards. Downtown Summerland is reported to be intact. The cause remains under investigation.
