Chile tornado damages homes, affects dozens

A rare tornado, this powerful and unexpected weather event, caused significant damage in Chile's central Ñuble region, impacting dozens of residents and many homes. It struck the Yungay commune, causing destruction in towns like Cholguán, Campanario, and San Miguel de Itata, prompting immediate emergency responses. Initial assessments confirm 96 people affected, with six rendered homeless due to severe damage, requiring immediate relocation to temporary shelters. Fifteen homes are confirmed damaged: one completely destroyed, three with major structural damage, and eleven with minor damage. 37 additional homes are being assessed. Classified as an EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, indicating wind speeds between 65 and 85 miles per hour, the tornado brought winds that tore off roofs, felled trees, and toppled power poles. This caused extensive power outages, affecting approximately 15,860 customers across Yungay, El Carmen, and Pemuco. Efforts to restore electricity continue, but thousands remain without power. Industrial infrastructure also suffered damage. The Arauco Trupán Cholguán panel plant was affected, with substantial structural harm. Emergency teams, including firefighters and police, deployed quickly to clear debris, assess properties, and assist residents. Tornadoes are rare in Chile. This event highlighted vulnerability to rare weather events and the importance of disaster preparedness. Authorities urge caution and adherence to official alerts as recovery proceeds. The government initiated efforts to support affected families and begin reconstruction.
