France marks Bastille Day with grand parade
France celebrated its National Day with a grand military parade along the Champs-Élysées, attended by President Emmanuel Macron, who reviewed the troops and highlighted the country's commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities. The parade showcased a variety of military assets, including jets, combat vehicles, and regiments from the army, marines, and civil security, featuring over 7,000 military personnel and 200 cavalry units. Notably, the event included the first public display of the upgraded Leclerc XLR main battle tank, part of France's SCORPION modernization program.
In a significant announcement, Macron revealed plans to accelerate France's defense spending, pledging to double the military budget from 2017 levels to 64 billion euros by 2027, three years ahead of schedule. This increase is in response to evolving geopolitical challenges, including threats from Russia and the need for Europe to bolster its self-defense capabilities. The military budget will see an additional 3.5 billion euros allocated for the upcoming year and another 3 billion euros in 2027.
The parade also featured Indonesia as a special guest, with Indonesian troops leading the procession, reflecting deepening defense ties and potential arms deals between the two nations. The event included participation from various allied countries, showcasing international cooperation in defense.
The ceremony concluded with a spectacular drone light show and fireworks near the Eiffel Tower, alongside traditional celebrations such as village fairs and national honors.
Crowds gathered to watch as drones encircled the landmark, spelling out “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” and “Accord de Paris” in tribute to France’s national motto and the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement.
According to French local media, the hybrid display featured 1,000 LED-equipped drones to produce the immersive visuals, pyrotechnic effects, and animated sequences.
