A UK-Spanish startup, B2Space, is developing a "Rockoon" system to significantly reduce space access costs for small satellites. This hybrid technology combines a stratospheric balloon with a rocket, leveraging an idea predating the Space Age where a giant balloon lifts a rocket into the stratosphere before firing it towards orbit. This method offers several key advantages over traditional ground-launched rockets. By carrying the rocket to an altitude of 20 to 25 kilometers, the system drastically reduces aerodynamic drag. Rocket ignition occurs in a near-vacuum environment, requiring simpler engines to reach orbital velocity. The B2Space Rockoon system provides cost-effective and environmentally friendly launch services for small and micro-satellites. Traditional rocket launches are expensive and cause delays for smaller payloads relying on "ridesharing." The stratospheric balloon system offers dedicated launch opportunities, providing greater flexibility and quicker access to orbit for these smaller spacecraft. The technology also contributes to sustainability by minimizing fuel consumption and reducing pollution compared to conventional launches, with emissions mainly water and some carbon dioxide. Reduced complexity in engineering and hardware lowers development and operational costs. B2Space recently completed a test launch of its Rockoon system from La Gomera in the Canary Islands, a significant step in developing this disruptive technology. This advancement could revolutionize the small satellite industry, making space access more affordable and accessible.
