Xavi Hernández to coach Netherlands
Spanish international Xavi Hernández has been appointed head coach of the Netherlands national team. The 46-year-old legend, known for his exceptional vision and passing ability, will lead the Dutch squad through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Xavi succeeds Ronald Koeman, who resigned following the Netherlands' early World Cup exit. Their performances had been inconsistent, prompting a search for new leadership. He becomes the first foreign coach in nearly five decades, a role last held by Ernst Happel in 1978. This marks a significant strategic shift for the national federation. He brings extensive experience from his playing and coaching careers. As a player, he won the World Cup in 2010 and European Championships in 2008 and 2012 with Spain. His managerial journey began with Qatari club Al Sadd before joining FC Barcelona. He guided Barcelona to the La Liga title in 2023, leaving the club in 2024. Xavi expressed profound honor at the appointment, highlighting his deep connection to Dutch football philosophy, influenced by Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels during his time at the Barcelona academy.
