Hockey Canada upholds most player suspensions

Hockey Canada has confirmed that four of the five players from its 2018 World Junior team, previously acquitted of sexual assault, will remain suspended from Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs. This decision follows an independent appeal board's determination that all five breached the organization's code of conduct. The allegations stem from a June 2018 incident at a London, Ontario hotel, following a gala celebrating the team's championship. Five players — Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dubé, and Cal Foote — were charged with sexual assault in January 2024. They were acquitted of criminal charges in July 2025 by an Ontario Superior Court judge. Despite acquittals, Hockey Canada's appeal board confirmed all five violated its code of conduct. Hockey Canada accepted the board's recommendations on suspensions and reinstatement. Alex Formenton has been reinstated immediately, making him eligible for Hockey Canada programs. The other four players face varying suspension lengths: Cal Foote until November 10, 2026; Carter Hart until November 10, 2027; Dillon Dubé until November 10, 2028; and Michael McLeod until November 10, 2030. Hockey Canada has not publicly explained the differing suspension durations or specific code of conduct breaches, citing confidentiality rules. The National Hockey League previously reinstated these players on December 1, lifting their league suspensions after criminal acquittals, allowing them to resume NHL play during Hockey Canada's internal appeal. All other 2018 World Junior team members are immediately eligible for Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs, subject to enhanced screening for national team selection.
