French nature reserves on a mission to save tortoises from wildfires
Conservationists are trying to save the Hermann's tortoise from wildfires. This rare and protected species lives in the National Nature Reserve of the Maures Plain in the Var region of France.
Hermann’s tortoise is the only existing tortoise species endemic to Europe. It is considered and important species and in France, it can only be found in the central Var region and in Corsica.
The Hermann’s tortoise is in danger of disappearing due to habitat destruction, fire, and dog attacks, illegal collection by individuals and diseases caught from captive tortoises released into the wild.
