India, UAE deepen defence ties
Modi and UAE leaders sign defence and energy cooperation deals
India and the United Arab Emirates agreed a framework for a strategic defence partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Persian Gulf nation, aiming to deepen ties amid regional tensions linked to the Iran war. The two governments signed agreements covering defence industrial collaboration, innovation and advanced technology, joint training and exercises, maritime security, cyber defence, secure communications and information exchange, signaling closer military and security coordination.
Energy cooperation featured prominently alongside defence. New pacts were signed on strategic petroleum reserves and the supply of liquefied petroleum gas, and Indian sources said Modi sought long-term energy supply deals and support to expand New Delhi’s strategic oil reserves. Officials framed the agreements as steps toward strengthening energy security and diversifying supply chains.
Leaders also agreed to broaden cooperation on trade, investment and critical infrastructure, including renewable energy and logistics, reflecting expanding economic ties forged over the past decade. The UAE is a major trading partner for India, and both sides emphasized moves to boost bilateral investment flows and joint projects tied to energy transition and digital innovation.
Analysts view the partnership as part of wider geopolitical realignments: Persian Gulf states are diversifying partnerships while Asian powers like India extend their strategic footprint across the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. Enhanced maritime and security cooperation aims to safeguard vital shipping routes and critical trade corridors.
The defence framework and related accords are expected to accelerate defence-industrial ties and operational collaboration in areas such as cybersecurity and communications, while energy agreements seek to secure longer-term fuel supplies for India. Together, the measures mark a significant deepening of India–UAE relations across strategic, economic and security domains.
