Kyiv mourns after deadly Russian strikes
A firefighting helicopter was seen battling thick smoke in Kyiv dropping water on multiple fires ignited by a significant Russian missile and drone attack that occurred overnight. The assault involved over 440 drones and 32 missiles, targeting civilian areas, including a large apartment block, resulting in at least 15 deaths and numerous injuries, including a U.S. citizen. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described the destruction as among the "most horrific" since the war began.
Emergency crews worked through the night to extinguish widespread fires and rescue trapped residents from a partially destroyed nine-story apartment building in the Solomianskyi district. Firefighters faced intense flames and thick smoke while using cranes and hoses to save individuals, including an elderly woman. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that emergency response teams were active throughout the night, combing through rubble to address remaining hotspots.
Zelenskiy condemned the attack as "pure terrorism" and urged the international community to respond decisively, declaring a national day of mourning. The assault coincided with Zelenskiy’s participation in the G-7 summit in Canada, where discussions on increased support for Ukraine were taking place, even as the U.S. under President Trump showed reluctance toward further sanctions on Russia.
Ukrainian air defenses reported successfully intercepting 402 of the 440 drones and 26 of the 32 missiles launched by Russia. As emergency operations continue, Kyiv has also initiated retaliatory drone strikes into Russian territory, intensifying the ongoing conflict. The situation remains critical as the city grapples with the aftermath of one of its deadliest attacks this year, highlighting the urgent need for international support and intervention in the escalating crisis.
