Hundreds of people gathered on the steps of the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul to honor former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Mourners carried candles, flowers, American flags, photographs, and handwritten messages, laying them at an impromptu memorial. Their tribute included a brass quintet from the Minnesota Orchestra, a Native American drum circle, a string quartet, and the communal singing of "Amazing Grace." The event was heavily secured, and no signs or speeches were allowed. Governor Tim Walz was visibly emotional, wiping away tears as he comforted attendees; he described Hortman as his closest political ally and perhaps the most consequential speaker in state history. Their son, Colin, embraced the governor and placed a photograph of his parents at the memorial. Earlier in the day, the University of Minnesota, where the Hortmans were alumni, held its own midday memorial. University President Rebecca Cunningham called for unity and community solidarity in the face of grief.

On June 14, 2025, the couple was shot and killed at their Brooklyn Park home before dawn by a suspect posing as a police officer. In a related incident earlier that morning, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot in their Champlin home; both survived.

The suspect, identified as 57‑year‑old Vance Luther Boelter, was arrested on June 15 after a manhunt. He now faces state and federal charges for murder, attempted murder, stalking, and firearms offenses.

This vigil was a powerful moment of public mourning and solidarity in response to a deeply shocking act of political violence. The quiet, respectful nature of the gathering—with music but no speeches—underscored a communal need for healing. Governor Walz’s emotional presence and the participation of diverse cultural elements highlighted the deep respect and affection many felt for the Hortmans.
