NYC shooting at NFL tower kills four
A shooting incident occurred inside a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper that houses the NFL headquarters and several major financial firms, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities. New York City officials reported that the suspect was "neutralized" following the attack, which prompted a significant police presence in the area.
Initial reports indicated that one New York Police Department officer was killed, along with three civilians, while two others were injured. The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, entered the building armed with an AR-15-style rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest. He began firing in the lobby before moving to the 33rd floor, where he ultimately took his own life.
Among the deceased was Officer Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant and expectant father, who was recognized as a heroic first responder during the incident. One additional person remains in critical condition, and several others sustained injuries. The NYPD confirmed that Tamura acted alone, and while his motives are still unclear, investigators found firearms, ammunition, and prescription medication in his vehicle. There were earlier suggestions of a possible link to the NFL, but this has not been confirmed.
The building and surrounding areas were placed on lockdown as FBI and local police secured the scene. This tragic event adds to the growing number of mass shootings in the U.S., which has reached a total of 254 for the year. City officials, including the mayor and police commissioner, expressed their condolences and emphasized the need for increased security measures in office buildings. The incident has raised concerns about safety in public spaces and the ongoing issue of gun violence in the country.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to understand the circumstances leading to the shooting and to ensure the safety of residents and workers in the area.
