Spain Opens Davis Cup Finals with 3-0 Win
Spain kicked off their Davis Cup Finals group stage campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic in Valencia. The tie was highlighted by world number three Carlos Alcaraz's match against Tomas Machac, which ended prematurely when Machac retired due to cramps after splitting the first two sets.
Roberto Bautista-Agut set the tone for Spain with a 7-6(1), 6-4 win over Jiri Lehecka in the opening singles match. Alcaraz then faced a tough challenge from Machac, losing the first set in a tiebreak before dominating the second set 6-1. The match concluded when Machac was unable to continue in the third set, giving Spain an unassailable 2-0 lead.
In the doubles, Alcaraz partnered with Marcel Granollers to complete the sweep, coming from behind to defeat Jakub Mensik and Adam Pavlasek. Alcaraz sealed the overall victory with an impressive lob shot.
The 21-year-old Alcaraz, playing in his first Davis Cup tie since September 2022, expressed excitement about representing Spain in Valencia. He acknowledged the challenge of adapting to different conditions after his recent US Open campaign.
