Taliban move closer to Afghan capital after taking Ghazni
The Taliban are just 150 kilometers from the Afghan capital Kabul, as they have taken the strategic city of Ghazni, the tenth provincial capital. to fall in a week.
Ghazni lies along the major Kabul-Kandahar highway, effectively serving as a gateway between the capital and Taliban strongholds in the south.
The Taliban are in control of the key areas of the city including the governor's office, the police headquarters and the prison, according to Nasir Ahmad Faqiri, head of the provincial council. He added that fighting continues in parts of the city but the provincial capital is largely in the hands of Taliban.
The Taliban have also confirmed capturing the city, according to a statement posted by their spokesman on social media.
In less than a week, the Taliban have seized 10 provincial capitals and have now encircled Mazar-i-Sharif, the biggest city in the north.
Fighting is also raging in Kandahar and Lashkar Gar, as well as Herat in the west.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands have been displaced by the fighting that has enveloped the country. In recent days, Kabul has been swamped by the displaced, who have begun camping out in parks and other public spaces, sparking a fresh humanitarian crisis in the capital.
