Thousands join festive Santa run in Germany

More than a thousand people in Father Christmas costumes turned a small German town into a sea of red as they took part in the 17th Michendorf Santa Run, a community event that mixes festive spirit with running across distances from 2.5 to 10 kilometres. Participants — from families and casual holiday-enthusiasts to well-trained competitors — gathered at the community centre, donned red coats, pointy hats and some with fluffy beards, and set off along routes that threaded the municipality just outside Berlin. Children had their own 1 km “Zipfelmützenlauf” (elf hat race), while adults chose between short and longer courses; winners’ fast times drew admiration but most competitors said they ran for fun and atmosphere rather than prizes.

Organisers from the local running club provided extra costumes for latecomers and those without full outfits, ensuring wide participation. Runners received chocolate Santas at the finish, handed out by helpers from the club, and many lingered afterwards to warm up with mulled wine, seasonal treats and warm drinks. A small Christmas market alongside the route offered handcrafted gifts and festive snacks, complementing the race with community stalls and conviviality.

Participants described the scene as more of a moving Santa parade than a competitive meet: laughter, bright red suits and a shared sense of goodwill were central themes. First-time runner Regina Tiller said she enjoyed the athletic challenge and the atmosphere so much she would take part again, while veteran Ulrich Kuehne praised the fun spirit and admired the performances of the fastest participants. Heiko Peschel, chairman of the organising club, called the event the biggest costumed Santa Claus run in Germany and celebrated the visual spectacle of more than 1,000 Santas.

Over its 17 editions, the Nikolauslauf has become a highlight of Michendorf’s Advent calendar, drawing visitors from across the region and serving as a joyful community tradition that blends sport, culture and holiday cheer in the heart of Brandenburg.
