Suspect dead after crash injures guard at Temple Israel

Truck rams Michigan synagogue

A suspect is dead after driving a truck through the doors of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, striking a security officer and prompting an armed confrontation with security personnel and police. Temple officials said all 140 preschool students inside were safe. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the vehicle traveled “all the way into the building” and wounded the security officer, who was pulled from the scene by colleagues and is expected to recover. A fire of unspecified origin filled much of the synagogue with smoke; around 30 officers were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital.

Authorities said the suspect was shot during the encounter and later died. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the death resulted from the shooting or other causes, and they are still investigating whether explosives were involved. The FBI is treating the incident as a potential targeted act of violence against the Jewish community and has opened an inquiry, including reviewing surveillance and examining the vehicle and the suspect’s background.

The attack occurred amid heightened concerns about domestic security following international tensions. President Donald Trump said he had been briefed and expressed support for the Michigan Jewish community. The incident followed an unrelated deadly classroom shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia, where the FBI opened a terrorism probe; authorities said the shooter there was a convicted Islamic State supporter subdued by students.

Local leaders praised first responders and urged calm while the investigation continues. Synagogues and Jewish institutions nationwide, already on alert amid a rise in antisemitic incidents, have increased security patrols. Officials cautioned against speculation, saying more details will be released as forensic and witness inquiries progress and as federal and local agencies coordinate to determine motive and any broader threat.
