Trump praises Kim, addresses market fears
US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his "good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stressing Kim's consistent respect. Trump indicated the possibility of re-engaging with North Korea and hinted at upcoming talks. Trump recalled meeting Kim, noting mutual understanding. These comments came as Trump also announced plans to reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. He cited his strong relationship with Kim Jong Un and the financial cost of such drills. Trump expressed a willingness to meet Kim again, citing their positive rapport. He made these remarks alongside South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung and Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who reportedly welcomed United States engagement with Pyongyang. Trump asserted that his approach is designed to enhance safety on the Korean Peninsula. On domestic economic matters, President Trump advised Americans not to be overly concerned about bond market volatility, asserting the economy remains robust. He characterized current interest rates as "artificially high." His remarks followed 30-year Treasury bond yields climbing to their highest levels since 2007, causing unease among investors. The United States Treasury announced a plan to double its buyback operations for 10- to 30-year debt to stabilize yields. Trump argued rates should decrease when the economy is strong, rather than solely to combat inflation. These discussions occur as total United States public debt nears $40 trillion, and Trump criticized the Federal Reserve's "political board" for its rate decisions.
