Wildfire rages in Catalonia's Pauls mountains
Firefighters in Catalonia are currently battling a significant wildfire in the Pauls mountains of Tarragona province, which has already burned over 150 hectares. The situation is critical, with large clouds of smoke visible as firefighters work to stabilize the fire's flanks. High winds are complicating efforts, prompting confinement orders and preventive evacuations in nearby towns.
A total of 75 firefighting teams, including 16 aerial units and two large FOCA aircraft, have been deployed to combat the blaze. This wildfire follows a devastating fire in Lleida province that scorched approximately 6,500 hectares and resulted in two fatalities. The current fire has already affected 1,600 hectares, with strong winds causing the flames to spread rapidly and open new fronts.
Approximately 14,000 residents were advised to stay indoors during the peak of the fire, and two firefighters sustained injuries during containment efforts. The rugged terrain and lack of access roads have made fire fighting challenging, leading to requests for additional aerial support from other regions.
Firefighters have reported extreme fire behavior, with flames spreading at speeds of up to 28 km/h and generating pyrocumulus clouds rising 14,000 meters into the atmosphere. The fire has approached residential areas, prompting evacuations and the closure of nearby highways.
Despite some progress in stabilizing parts of the fire, authorities remain vigilant due to ongoing heatwave conditions. Firefighters are prioritizing rescues and protecting property while working to contain the blaze. The situation remains dynamic, with expectations of improved weather conditions that may aid in stabilization efforts.
