Xiaomi unveils Leica-focused 17 Series

New flagship highlights camera tech and premium push

Xiaomi unveils Leica-focused 17 Series

Xiaomi unveiled its Leica Leitzphone as the flagship of a new Xiaomi 17 Series, showcasing an intensified partnership with Leica and a focus on premium photography capabilities. The Leitzphone introduces a mechanical Leica Camera Ring intended to replicate the tactile feel of a traditional zoom lens and debuts Leica Essential Mode, designed to reproduce the colour science and image character of classic Leica cameras such as the M9.

The Xiaomi 17 Series centers on Leica‑tuned optical systems and high‑end performance powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipsets. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the range‑topper, adds a 1‑inch LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) main sensor for greater dynamic range and a 200‑MP telephoto unit offering mechanical 75–100mm optical zoom. The standard Xiaomi 17 includes a 6,330 mAh battery with up to 100W wired charging and high‑refresh‑rate displays targeting gaming and media use. Storage and memory options scale to premium needs.

Xiaomi also expanded its AIoT portfolio at the event, revealing products such as the Xiaomi Watch 5 and Xiaomi Scooter 6 Ultra, signaling a broader ecosystem push alongside its smartphone ambitions.

Xiaomi presented upgraded camera hardware, bespoke Leica image processing, updated shooting modes and custom image profiles integrated into the phone’s software—aimed at improved low‑light performance, truer colour reproduction and professional‑grade portrait results. Company executives framed the 17 Series as a strategic effort to bolster Xiaomi’s position in the global premium smartphone market, using the Leica collaboration as a key differentiator amid intense competition over imaging credentials.

Market reaction will hinge on real‑world imaging performance, pricing and regional availability; Xiaomi indicated preorders would follow the launch, with specific pricing to vary by market. Analysts note that while Leica branding and novel mechanical controls may attract photography‑focused buyers, the series’ commercial success will depend on consumer reception relative to rival flagship offerings.
