Frist plastic-free beach opens in Cyprus

Ayia Triada in Paralimni is the first beach in Cyprus that encourages and facilitates its visitors to avoid the use of disposable plastic.

A huge sculpture of a green sea turtle created from plastic waste installed near the beach, stresses the longevity of plastic as a material, since it can remain in the environment for hundreds of years.

The initiative is part of the “Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free” project, in collaboration with the Municipality of Paralimni.

Facilities to encourage visitors to avoid the use of single use plastics are installed by several NGOs and the municipality at the Ayia Triada beach in Paralimni.

The beach is now equipped with a water station for cold, filtered and free water. It includes an area for smokers and signs with information on how the visitors can become part of the solution, not the problem are also found at selected points.

The artwork by Vangelis Evangelou was created with plastic waste collected during beach and sea clean-up campaigns.
