Malta Labour wins fourth term
Abela secures renewed mandate in election victory
Malta’s Labour Party secured a fourth consecutive parliamentary term, with Prime Minister Robert Abela declaring a record-breaking victory after vote counts gave the party a comfortable majority, albeit narrower than in 2022 when it won about 55% of ballots. Voter turnout reached 87.4%, slightly above the previous general election. Celebrations erupted across towns and in party headquarters, with supporters filling streets, waving flags, lighting flares and chanting.
Labour campaigned on a record of strong economic performance, claiming achievements in job creation, foreign investment and infrastructure that it says underpin continued stability and public-service investment. The party credited its economic stewardship and experience in office for securing broad public support. Opponents, led by the Nationalist Party, argued that rising living costs and deteriorating quality of life for some citizens undercut the government’s record.
Analysts interpret the outcome as confirmation of Labour’s ability to sustain a wide coalition of voters despite sustained criticism from civil society and scrutiny over past controversies. They further note Malta’s recent economic resilience—driven by tourism, finance, technology and maritime services—as a likely factor influencing voter choices, even as challenges such as housing affordability and infrastructure strain remain.
Abela, who succeeded Joseph Muscat as party leader in 2020, is set to be sworn in for another term, and the government is expected to pursue priorities including economic modernization, renewable energy, transport upgrades and healthcare investment. Observers say the renewed mandate provides political stability to advance the administration’s agenda, but also raises expectations that Labour will address social and environmental pressures accompanying rapid development.
