Rami Al Ali debuts at Paris Couture Week

Rami Al Ali has made history as the first Syrian designer to present at Paris Haute Couture Week, showcasing his fall collection titled "Guardian of Light." Known for his elegant evening wear, which has been worn by celebrities like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez, Al Ali expressed his happiness at being recognized by the fashion industry's "official authority."

Born in Deir ez-Zor and educated in Damascus, the 53-year-old designer founded his eponymous label in 2001 and was first invited to Paris Couture Week in 2012. His recent runway show marks his debut in the official Paris Haute Couture calendar, featuring pastel-toned, intricately embroidered gowns that symbolize hope for Syria's future.

"It is different being on the official calendar (of Paris Fashion Week), being acknowledged. You know that your work has been seen, judged properly, you have been endorsed by one of the most official authorities in fashion, particularly in the haute couture industry," he said.

Haute Couture is a prestigious designation for elite designers, including Chanel and Dior, known for their exclusive, often handmade creations using luxury fabrics. The Paris fall-winter haute couture fashion shows include other renowned labels such as Schiaparelli and Balenciaga.

Al Ali's collection showcased long pleated dresses made from silk, rolled crepe, and adorned with embroidery and beading, reflecting his optimism for Syria, particularly in light of recent political changes. His inclusion in the official schedule of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode highlights the growing influence of Arab designers in the haute couture scene.

This milestone not only represents a personal achievement for Al Ali but also signifies a broader recognition of Middle Eastern talent in the global fashion industry. His success challenges the perception of the region as merely consumers of luxury fashion, paving the way for greater representation and acknowledgment of Arab designers on the world stage.
