Rescuers in Kyiv have been working through the wreckage since an overnight Russian drone‑and‑missile strike killed at least five people, injured scores, sparked fires, and damaged both residential buildings and public infrastructure, including metro station entrances being used as bomb shelters.

The most severely hit area was the Shevchenkivskyi district, where a residential building's entrance was obliterated, leaving at least four dead and multiple people still believed trapped under debris.

Emergency Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed rescue efforts are still ongoing to reach those buried, using fire crews, sniffer dogs, and heavy machinery.

Elsewhere in the wider Kyiv region, a 68‑year‑old woman was killed and eight more were wounded in attacks on other residential zones, according to regional authorities. In one high‑rise, rescuers evacuated at least ten people, including a pregnant woman, from fire-damaged buildings during the night, with ambulances and firefighters aiding survivors.

The assault impacted six of Kyiv’s ten districts, including damage to apartment blocks, metro exits, and bus stops—the capital’s metro being a key refuge throughout the conflict. Local officials stressed that such strikes—hitting “where there may be people”—exemplify Russia’s strategy targeting civilian areas.

This recent attack follows last week’s deadliest wave, which killed 28 people during a massive strike involving over 440 drones and 32 missiles, marking the deadliest assault on Kyiv in months.

Though both sides deny intentionally targeting civilians, the civilian toll continues to mount as rescue teams race to recover any remaining survivors.
