The 72-year-old actor, visibly moved, described the recognition as “beyond the Oscar” and used the moment to reflect on a career spanning decades and multiple generations of filmgoers.
Propeller One-Way Night Coach is adapted from a novel Travolta wrote about thirty years ago and follows a boy’s growing passion for aviation and a consequential cross-country flight to Los Angeles during the golden age of flying. Travolta framed the film as intensely personal: he produced, financed, directed, narrated and wrote the project, and said he declined offers from others to helm it because he wanted to bring his own perspective to the story as a capstone to his life’s work.
Travolta flew himself to the festival with his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, who appears in the film as one of the flight attendants. At the tribute event, festival organizers and peers praised his long-standing contributions to international cinema, and the audience responded with a standing ovation. Travolta invoked his varied artistic life—stage, screen, singing, dancing and his lifelong love of flying—calling the moment a culmination of those passions.
The actor’s rise began in the late 1970s with breakthrough roles in Saturday Night Fever and Carrie; after a career lull he regained prominence with Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, later sustaining star status with films such as Get Shorty, Face/Off and Hairspray.
