Several U.S. personnel were injured in an attack against a military base in Iraq, three U.S. officials said, as concerns in the region mounted following last week's killing of senior members of militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the suspected rocket attack took place at Al Asad airbase in Iraq. They said they were citing initial information which could change.

"Base personnel are conducting a post-attack damage assessment," one of the officials added.

Two Katyusha rockets were fired at the base in western Iraq, security sources said. One security source said the rockets fell inside the base.

Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' spokesperson, Mohammad Naeeni, saying: "As the head commander of the IRGC has said before, The IRCG has not let any vicious act of the Zionist enemy go unanswered. The answer to this recent vicious act of terrorism (assassination of Hamas chief) - taking in consideration its appropriate requirements - will definitely be given in the right time. As the head commander of the IRGC and the Supreme Leader have said, it will be a severe answer."

Meanwhile Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Sergei Shoigu, the secretary of Russia's security council.

"Russia is among the countries that have stood by the Iranian nation during difficult times," Pezeshkian told Shoigu in a meeting, Iranian state media reported.

Russia has condemned the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, in Iran last week.

Also Iranian major general of Islamic revolutionary guard corps, Mohammad Bagheri, hosted Russian Security Council secretary Sergei Shoigu in Tehran, discussing potential cooperation on regional issues.

There are mounting fears that Israel's war against Palestinian militants in Gaza, which began last October after attacks on the Jewish state, could escalate into a wider Middle East conflict.
