Dembélé and Bonmatí shine at Ballon d’Or

The 69th Ballon d’Or ceremony was held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, honoring the world’s best football players, coaches, and clubs for their achievements in the 2024–25 season. The event gathered top names of the sport, past legends, and fans to celebrate excellence on and off the pitch.

In the men’s category, Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembélé won the Ballon d’Or for the first time in his career. His exceptional season, highlighted by guiding PSG to their historic first UEFA Champions League title and contributing key performances in Ligue 1, placed him ahead of other contenders. Dembélé’s win marks a significant moment for French football, as he became the first Frenchman since Karim Benzema in 2022 to lift the golden ball.

For the women’s award, Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatí wrote her name deeper into history by winning the Ballon d’Or for the third consecutive year. Despite Barcelona losing the Women’s Champions League final, Bonmatí’s consistent brilliance, leadership in midfield, and ability to deliver in big matches cemented her dominance in women’s football.

The Kopa Trophy, given to the best young players under 21, saw a double victory for Barcelona. Rising sensation Lamine Yamal captured the men’s award after his breakthrough season with Barcelona and Spain, while Vicky López received the women’s Kopa Trophy, rewarding her rapid progress and technical ability.

The Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper went to PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, who played a vital role in their Champions League triumph with crucial saves in decisive moments. On the women’s side, England’s Hannah Hampton earned the recognition as best goalkeeper for her commanding displays throughout the season.

Meanwhile, the Gerd Müller Trophy, awarded to the season’s top scorers, was presented to Viktor Gyökeres for men and Poland’s Ewa Pajor for women. Their prolific goalscoring records underlined their importance for club and country.

The ceremony also paid tribute to football legends of the past and highlighted the global reach of the sport, with representatives from across continents attending. The Ballon d’Or remains the most prestigious individual award in football, symbolizing not only personal glory but also the effort and teamwork behind every success.

This year’s edition reflected a new generation rising to prominence while established stars continued to shine, showing that football’s legacy of excellence is secure for the future.
