Ocean Race fleet nears halfway mark
Paprec Arkea leads closely fought final leg to Montenegro
The leaders of the Ocean Race Europe fleet are nearing the halfway point of the fifth and final leg to Boka Bay, Montenegro, after departing from Genoa, Italy. This 1,600-nautical mile journey has taken them past the Italian island of Pantelleria, with the fleet now heading east toward Sicily. Team Paprec Arkea, led by skipper Yoann Richomme, is currently in the lead, closely followed by Biotherm, Allagrande Mapei Racing, and Team Malizia.
Team Paprec Arkea secured two points at the scoring gate for Leg 5, reducing their deficit to leaders Biotherm to just 10 points as the race intensified. The competition is fierce, with the top four boats—Paprec Arkéa, Biotherm, Team Malizia, and Allagrande Mapei Racing—separated by only a few kilometers. After navigating through a thunderstorm and heavy rain, Paprec Arkéa maintains a slim lead of about three miles over Biotherm, with the gap between the top four boats totaling approximately 11 nautical miles.
The conditions have been unpredictable, shifting from light winds to a low-pressure system that has brought stronger winds exceeding 30 knots. Crews have faced challenges in sail control and have had to push their boats hard, balancing speed with the risk of broaching during downwind stretches. Richomme's tactical navigation has kept Paprec Arkéa ahead, while Biotherm's Paul Meilhat is actively seeking to capitalize on any changes in wind or course.
As the finish line approaches, the outcome of this leg could significantly impact the overall standings. The final scoring leg in Boka Bay will determine not only the winner of Leg 5 but also the final podium placements. With evolving marine weather forecasts, the race remains wide open, and strategic decisions are crucial. Every mile, sail trim, and tactical choice could be the difference between victory and defeat as the fleet enters Montenegrin waters.
