Ecuador ex-VP Glas to face embezzlement trial
A judge in Ecuador has ruled that former Vice President Jorge Glas will face trial for alleged embezzlement related to the misuse of public funds designated for the reconstruction of areas affected by the 2016 earthquake. Glas, who is currently serving prison sentences for two previous corruption convictions, is accused of misdirecting funds intended for rebuilding efforts in the Manabí and Esmeraldas provinces to non-priority projects.
During a public hearing, Judge Marco Aguirre stated that there is sufficient evidence suggesting Glas committed embezzlement by improperly using reconstruction funds for unrelated projects. Prosecutors allege that Glas, who led the reconstruction efforts, redirected funds raised through increased VAT to benefit certain contractors and supervisors, undermining the intended purpose of the financial resources.
Glas served as vice president under Rafael Correa from 2013 to 2017 and has been a controversial figure in Ecuadorian politics. His case gained international attention following his re-arrest after seeking asylum at the Mexican embassy in Quito in 2024. This incident led to a diplomatic rift between Ecuador and Mexico, with a tribunal later deeming the arrest illegal, although it upheld Glas's imprisonment due to his prior convictions.
Glas's attorney, Sonia Vera, has denounced the ruling as politically motivated, arguing that there is no evidence of personal gain or damage to the national treasury, both of which are essential elements for the embezzlement charge. The upcoming trial is expected to further test Ecuador's judicial independence and its commitment to anti-corruption efforts amid ongoing political tensions in the country. As the legal proceedings unfold, the case will likely draw significant public and media attention, reflecting the broader challenges facing Ecuador's political landscape.
