Iran holds funeral for Ali Shamkhani
Senior official killed in U.S. Israeli strikes
A funeral ceremony was held at the Imamzadeh Saleh Shrine in Tehran’s Tajrish Square, for Ali Shamkhani, former Defense Council chief of Iran, who was killed in attacks by the US and Israel. Mourners gathered at the shrine in the Iranian capital to pay their respects during the ceremony held for the senior Iranian official.
Tensions have escalated significantly since Israel and the U.S. launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,200 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Persian Gulf countries hosting U.S. military assets.
Shamkhani was a key figure in the Iran nuclear talks and served as the chief of the Defence Council. He was also an advisor to the late Supreme Leader.
Shamkhani had previously survived an Israeli assassination attempt last June, which resulted in the loss of a leg. His death marks a significant moment in Iran’s military and political landscape, given his prominence in shaping the country’s defence strategies.
The funeral procession drew attention as it highlighted Shamkhani’s importance in both military and diplomatic spheres. His role in the nuclear negotiations with world powers positioned him as a key player in Iran’s foreign policy.
