Peru destroys vast drug haul in Lima

Peruvian authorities recently carried out a significant drug destruction operation in the capital, Lima. Over eleven tons of seized illicit substances were incinerated at the Peruvian National Police's Special Operations Directorate base in the Ate district. This substantial destruction included primarily cocaine-based drugs and cannabis sativa. The Ministry of Interior, through its General Directorate against Organized Crime, oversaw the event, emphasizing the government's unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and organized crime. Officials highlighted that such actions are a clear demonstration of the country's institutions acting decisively to protect citizens and uphold the rule of law. They stressed that every kilogram destroyed means less danger for families, fewer resources for criminal organizations, and greater hope for a safer Peru. So far this year, Peruvian security forces have seized more than thirty-nine tons of illicit substances and over eight tons of controlled chemical inputs used in drug production. These comprehensive efforts have also led to the dismantling of fifty-two criminal organizations and the shutdown of two hundred and seventy-two illegal drug laboratories across the country. This operation marks the third such destruction process in the current year, bringing the total amount of narcotics incinerated to over twenty-two tons. Authorities view these continuous operations as a direct and significant blow to criminal networks engaged in drug trafficking, aiming to disrupt their operations and financial flows within Peru.
