Tornado strikes New York's Atlantic Beach

Cleanup efforts are underway in Atlantic Beach, New York, after an EF-1 tornado struck the community. The waterspout, making landfall at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, carved a path of destruction through the Sun and Surf Beach Club. The NWS confirmed it as an EF-1, with a 0.36-mile path, 100 yards wide. Winds reached 97 mph, lasting three minutes. Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as the dark funnel cloud spun up, tearing through the beachfront area. Despite the tornado's significant force and hundreds present, no serious injuries or fatalities were reported; officials called it miraculous. One minor injury to a staff member was noted, but the individual refused medical attention. The swift actions of those present to seek shelter likely contributed to the low number of casualties. Extensive structural damage occurred, particularly to cabanas at the Sun and Surf Beach Club. About 50 of 115 cabanas were affected, with roofs torn off and debris scattered. Owners lost about a third of their cabanas. Neighboring beach clubs also experienced damage, leading to temporary closures as assessments continue. A brief state of emergency in Nassau County mobilized emergency services, then lifted as cleanup commenced. This is Nassau County's first confirmed tornado since 2021, highlighting severe weather's unpredictable nature in coastal areas. Officials emphasize heeding warnings and seeking immediate shelter during rapid-onset events. The community focuses on recovery and rebuilding for damaged properties.
