Iran joins BRICS talks in India
Tehran urged BRICS nations to deepen cooperation and oppose unilateral sanctions
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in New Delhi to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting. Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS has expanded in recent years to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs urged BRICS to become a platform for equal cooperation, mutual respect, independent decision‑making and defense of nations’ rights against monopolies, sanctions and coercive policies. Speaking from New Delhi ahead of BRICS foreign ministers’ preparatory meetings, Kazem Gharibabadi framed Iran’s active participation as a strategic choice to bolster multilateralism, expand equitable cooperation and help shape a fairer international order.
Gharibabadi highlighted Iran’s geopolitical, energy, transit, scientific and human capacities as assets for BRICS’ agenda on balanced development, economic security and regional connectivity, arguing Tehran can help strengthen the voice of independent nations and reduce reliance on discriminatory, unilateral mechanisms. He said opposing US unilateral coercive measures is integral to defending economic justice and the right of nations to develop.
The New Delhi meetings come as BRICS grapples with producing a common position on the US‑Israeli war of aggression against Iran.
