Sundance Film Festival moves to Boulder

After over four decades in Park City, Utah, the Sundance Film Festival will relocate to Boulder, Colorado, beginning in 2027. The decision follows a comprehensive search process involving various U.S. cities, including finalist bids from Cincinnati, Ohio, and a combined Salt Lake City and Park City proposal. Boulder's vibrant arts scene, walkable downtown, and proximity to the University of Colorado were key factors in its selection.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed enthusiasm about the move, highlighting the anticipated economic and cultural benefits for the state. He emphasized that the festival would create jobs and support small businesses, including local stores and restaurants.
The relocation is expected to provide a significant economic boost to Boulder and the surrounding region. The festival's presence is anticipated to enhance tourism and bolster local businesses, mirroring the positive impact it had in Utah.
Boulder holds a special connection to the festival's founder, Robert Redford, who attended the University of Colorado in the 1950s. This historical tie adds a personal dimension to the festival's new home.
While the move is celebrated in Colorado, it represents a significant economic loss for Utah, which benefited from approximately $132 million annually due to the festival. Despite the change, the Sundance Institute remains committed to its mission of supporting independent filmmakers and fostering artistic expression.
The final Sundance Film Festival in Park City is scheduled for January 2026, with the inaugural Boulder event set for January 2027. The festival's leadership is dedicated to ensuring a seamless transition and maintaining the event's esteemed reputation in its new location.
