Israeli strikes intensify across Gaza
Large plumes of smoke were observed rising from Gaza as Israeli planes and tanks launched extensive strikes across the region, targeting clusters of homes in both northern and southern Gaza. This escalation comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's confidant, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, is in Washington to discuss potential ceasefire negotiations amid ongoing hostilities.
Local health authorities reported that Israeli military actions over the past 24 hours have resulted in at least 112 deaths and over 400 injuries, with significant destruction noted in Gaza City's Shejaia and Zeitoun districts, as well as in Khan Younis and Rafah. Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate as Israeli tanks advance into eastern Gaza City and other areas.
In a separate incident, an Israeli airstrike in Zawayda killed at least six people, contributing to a total of 60 fatalities across Gaza on the same day, marking one of the heaviest days of violence in recent weeks. Despite claims from Israel that it takes precautions to avoid civilian casualties, the humanitarian toll continues to rise.
Netanyahu is expected to travel to the U.S. next week for a meeting with President Donald Trump on July 7, where discussions will likely focus on Iran, Gaza, and other regional issues.
Hamas has indicated a willingness to release hostages as part of a broader deal to end the conflict, while Israel insists that hostages must be freed before any ceasefire can be established. The war, which began on October 7, 2023, has resulted in over 56,000 Palestinian deaths, primarily civilians, and has displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis. Mediators from Qatar and Egypt are reportedly increasing their efforts to facilitate ceasefire talks, although no date has been set for new negotiations.
